Transfer balance and block card
If your registered Opal card has been lost, stolen or damaged, you can transfer the balance to another Opal card.
To complete an online balance transfer, both Opal cards must be active and registered to the same Opal account.
Transferring the balance will permanently block the original card, so you won't be able to use it again. It may take up to 24 hours to show the updated balance on your new card.
You cannot transfer the balance from an unregistered Opal card. Not registered? Register your card now.
To complete an online balance transfer, both Opal cards must be active and registered to the same Opal account.
If you don’t have another Opal card, order a replacement card on the Opal website and transfer the balance from the original card. The original card will be permanently blocked.
- Log in to your Opal account. You will need your Opal card account username and password.
- Select the Opal card you wish to block and transfer its balance.
- Select the ‘Manage’ tab.
- Select ‘Transfer balance of this Opal card’.
- Follow the prompts to transfer the balance to another Opal card that’s linked to your account.
What you need to know:
- Balance transfers may take up to 24 hours to process.
- After 24 hours, you will need to tap on at an Opal reader within 60 days to complete the transfer.
- Balance transfers and adjustments must be collected by tapping on at an Opal card reader within 60 days, otherwise you will need to contact Opal Customer Care to reapply.
- Opal cards have a maximum balance limit. Any funds exceeding this amount will cause your balance transfer to be unsuccessful:
- Adult and Senior/Pensioner – maximum balance is $250
- Concession and Child/Youth – maximum balance is $150.
- Any auto top up you have set on your original Opal card will also transfer to your new Opal card. If you do not want to transfer your auto top up, you'll need to disable it from the 'Top up' tab in your account before transferring the balance.
- Log in to your account on the Opal website
- Select 'Transfer balance to another Opal card'
- Follow the prompts to order a replacement Opal card.
Note:
- Gold Senior/Pensioner or Concession Opal card holders can order a new card on the Opal website as part of the transfer process.
- New cards can take five to seven business days to be mailed to you. In the meantime, you can use an Adult Opal card or tap on and tap off with a credit card, debit card or linked device to make a contactless payment for an Adult Opal fare.
If you don't have another active card linked to the same account, you'll only be able to block the lost, stolen or damaged card. Once you have another Opal card, contact Opal Customer Care to request that the balance from your blocked card be transferred to your new card.
For more information please see the Opal Refund and Balance Transfer Policy Form (pdf 562KB).
If your Opal card is already blocked, you will need to contact Opal Customer Care to transfer the balance to an active Opal card.
